30-Day Challenges to start the year!

It’s a new school year and a time for beginnings and adding positivity to our lives.  Personally, I am working on a gratitude journal and was inspired to challenge my College Literature and Composition II class, my American Literature II class, and my AP English Literature and Composition class to embark on this adventure with me.   I am hoping students add something positive to their lives for not just the 30 days, but longer.  This TED talk was my inspiration! Perhaps it will inspire you, too!

 

Here are a few of my students’ challenges:

  • 30 minute walk (Madeline)
  • journaling (Brianna)
  • drink 32 ounces of water (Tayden)
  • crochet for 20 minutes (CJ)
  • complete an act of kindness (Jecca)
  • make bed in the morning (Riley)

15 Thoughts

  1. I had to eat breakfast every morning. For the mornings that I didn’t accomplish my goal I had to wake up 5 minutes earlier the next morning to make sure I had time to eat. I was able to do it almost the whole time.

  2. I’ve been crocheting everyday for almost the past month now. I used to crochet in 6th grade, but my skills have worsened since then!
    When the challenge started, I picked up some cheap yarn from the thift store. I started working on a very fluffy pastel rainbow scarf. It didn’t turn out as thick as I hoped, but the yarn itself was cute, so it made me happy!
    I also tried making some other things like hats and learning new techniques. The good thing about crochet is that you can unravel it pretty easily, so you never waste yarn if you mess up and want to make something new!
    I feel very relaxed when I crochet. It’s something that I know I KNOW how to do, so I don’t stress too much about failing or it looking bad. It’s something I’d like to only do for myself though, not sell any of my work. It’s a productive hobby that most people can do!

  3. Over the past 30 days, I haven’t gone on a 30 minutes walk everyday, but overall I have been more active and I feel I have been living a healthier lifestyle! Walking everyday has been a good motivation for me to be more aware of my eating habits as well.

  4. For the last 30 days I have been able to drink 32 oz of water each day. Since I made my goal each day I’m going to continue to try and do this challenge, however now I am going to try and drink 64 oz a day.

  5. My challenge was to drink more water everyday to not be as dehydrated. If I didn’t that day then I had to go without mtn dew my favorite drink. I had to keep it small because before this I almost never drank any water at all. I drank everyday as a matter of fact.

  6. For the past 30 days I have tried to journal some way everyday. While it was a challenge somedays, it has become something that I enjoy to do that benefits myself.

    To drink 2 bottles of water a day.
    I felt like it was really hard. I feel like it made me be more awake each day. What was hard is that I had to use the bathroom more and I had to force myself to drink water each day. But the 30 day challenge helped me be hydrated.

    *My challenge was to spend a half hour to an hour outside every day
    *Some days were hard to really complete this challenge if it was raining hard, I would either be on the porch or I would do extra time outside the next day if it was an issue. Otherwise I really enjoyed this challenge and it was refreshing to do.

  9. My challenge was to drink a healthy shake every morning to boost my energy. If at any time that I failed to complete this task my punishment was to remove my consumtion of junk food for the following day. Surprisingly, drinking the shake was pretty easy once I got a few days in. It was making the shake that gave me greif.

  10. I wanted to add reading into my routine, so for my challenge I had a goal of reading 20 pages a day. If I didn’t do it, I wouldn’t watch TV for the day. Reading 20 pages a day doesn’t seem like a lot, but with school and work it was surprisingly hard to accomplish every single day. On the days I did do it, it was a great time to myself that I was able to enjoy. Although, I won’t do it everyday, I am going to try to get reading in once a week because of the positive outcome it has on me.

  11. I have always struggled with confidence and being too self-critical. So, I decided that for my 30-day challenge I would write down one positive thing about self each day and if I did not then I had to write down 3 positive things the next day. How the thirty-day challenge works is that you were supposed to pick one thing to add to your everyday life for thirty days that would benefit you. Then you had to give your self a consequence to help your challenge. Personally I did a lot better with the challenge that I thought I would and I only missed 4 days out of the month.

  12. My 30 day challenge was to lift in the morning at 6:30 at least 4 times a week, and I have noticed that I have obtained a great amount of muscle mass, and I am getting very big and I will be able to lift the bar PLUS WEIGHT!!!!

  13. My 30 day challenge was to learn something new everyday besides what I do in school. So far it has been working well and I have learned many new facts about things that I did not think about or know before. I found out that be learning something new everyday keeps our minds young and helps us when we are older when our minds to work as well as they used to and when knowledge starts to fade away.

  14. My 30 day challenge was a gratitude journal. In my journal I wrote down a lot of positive things about myself and school, etc. It went well and it looked really cute and colorful. I learned a lot about myself and some of the people I see everyday along with many positive side notes to keep me feeling happy. My punishment for in-completing the journal was to give up a few pairs of shoes.
